3 Ways To Get Noticed At Work

If you are watching your peers get promoted ahead of you at work, and you are getting more and more resentful of it, you need to find a way to get noticed for good reason and not for the volcanic eruption that will ensue if this continues.

At Lion Leadership, we recommend you target three different types of people in 3 different ways. Namely, the way you approach your supervisors, your peers, and your direct reports should all be very intentional to be noticed for the strong worker you are.

#1 = Your Directs

First, instead of staring up the hierarchy and swinging your fist to the sky, remember to look down. Pay attention to your own people. Is everything in your lane going as well as it can? Have you poured into your people the way you hope someone will pour into you? This is a nice way of saying it might be best to first ‘mind your own’ before comparing yourself to others and feeling anxious to get promoted. Be the best manager and leader you can possibly be for your people, and you just might see that karma come back in good ways to you.

#2 = Your Peers

It’s possible that you are friends with your coworkers, yet it is also possible that you and your coworkers are far from friendly. Whatever the case, you need to make sure the lines of communication are open and working. Why? Because you must have their respect if you are going to get promoted – especially if that promotion would put you in a position senior to them. We recommend that you make it a point to meet with them, ask them what you do well and what your blind-spots are, ask for their support, or their trust, or even their respect if you are not sure you have it.

#3 = Your Boss

If you have not directly asked your boss to consider you for promotion this might be the time to do it. If you have, and especially if you have multiple times over, likely your supervisor is not interested in hearing about it again. Instead, approach your supervisor with the intention of getting a mission-critical assignment. You might need to pitch one for yourself. It’s time to take a risk and prove your worth. Make sure the assignment requires you to work with other people in a collaborative environment. Pour into them the same as you would your direct reports.
