Thinking Of Switching Jobs? 3 Things To Do First

You may catch yourself lately thinking about switching jobs. There is a lot going on in the world of talent management today. “The Great Resignation” is juxtaposed with many companies struggling to rehire talent to backfill positions. For persons in the shuffle, there is certainly a lot to think about.

These questions are on the minds of our clients today:

  • Can I get better pay or a better title somewhere else?

  • Can I find a greater purpose or more meaningful work somewhere else?

  • Can I find a better work/life balance somewhere else?

The answer is complicated. From Lion Leadership, our advice to people thinking of switching jobs is to follow these three steps.

#1 – Get Real About Why You Want To Leave

It’s time to get intensely curious about your own motivations. Upon prompting, we find what is consistent in the literature on talent à People don’t leave bad jobs they leave bad managers. Are you wanting to leave because you have a bad manager? Or a toxic coworker? The grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the hill. Why? Because these characters are likely to be wherever you go next.

#2 – Determine What You Have Yet To Learn Where You Are

It will take a minute to find the next perfect job for you. Instead of doing lackluster work where you are until you go, think about what you can gain while you are in the space of “the in-between.” Perhaps you need to learn how to deal with difficult people, how to have tough conversations, or how to stop being uncomfortable speaking up. If you feel like the writing is on the wall and you need to run away quickly, what skills can you develop before you go?

#3 – Decide With Great Intention What is Next For You

Resume slinging is not recommended. And, yes, you know what I am talking about. Throwing your resume against all LinkedIn job posts that remotely might consider you hoping something will stick. Figure out what your dream job truly is and then go for that – and go for that only. We find clients often let what is available and “gettable” define who they are. Let’s turn that around with this next search.

We wish you the very best of luck with your job search or with your decision to stay.
